NATCHEZ — A man who was arrested Jan. 28 in Adams County on charges of failing to register as a convicted sex offender and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon was sentenced in federal court in Jackson on Tuesday to 57 months in prison and fines.

Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Jeremiah Dwight Thornburg, 37, of 127 Tubman Circle, on charges of possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and failure to register as a sex offender, said Lt. Cal Green of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

Thornburg, Green said, was later arrested on Feb. 10 on a federal warrant for failing to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act and was transported to Jackson.

“I don’t believe he was even supposed to be in our county,” Green said.

The Mississippi Sex Offender Registry shows Thornburg was convicted on a sexual assault (attempt) in 2008 in Clark, Nevada.

Green said Thornburg had not notified authorities he was planning to relocate to Adams County nor had he registered as a convicted sex offender once he arrived.

Under a plea agreement entered May 29 in the U.S. District Court Southern District in Jackson, Thornburg pleaded guilty to count 1, failure to register as a sex offender, and count 2, felon in possession of a firearm, and was sentenced Tuesday to 57 months imprisonment and a lifetime term of post-release supervision.

Thornburg also was ordered to pay a $1,500 fine and $200 total in special assessment fees per counts 1 and 2.
