MHSAA roundup: Natchez High holds on for win over Port Gibson

LORMAN — The Natchez High School Bulldogs survived another scare from an MHSAA Class 3A opponent as they held on for a 22-16 win over the Port Gibson High School Blue Waves Friday night.

The game between Class 5A Natchez High and ‘host’ Port Gibson took place at Spinks-Casem Stadium on the campus of Alcorn State University because Port Gibson’s stadium is still undergoing renovations.

Fans of both teams were treated to a closer-than-expected match-up between the Bulldogs and the Blue Waves.

“It was a good game. It came down to the fourth quarter. We played the kind of ball we wanted to and that was being physical,” Natchez High head coach Roy Rigsby said. “Their quarterback, D’Marius Hicks, is an explosive, dangerous player. He was able to get away from us a couple of times.”

Rigsby said the running game, led by Desnick Bolden and Javontae “Joe” Davis was a key factor in the contest.

“They ran the ball hard all night long. I was so proud of the offensive line,” Rigsby said. “We were fortunate that it worked out for us.”

Natchez High (2-0) is off this Friday before hosting defending Class 3A state champion Jefferson Davis County at 7 p.m.on Sept. 14.

Wilkinson County 37, Raymond 0

RAYMOND — The Wilkinson County High School Wildcats jumped out to a 20-0 lead and never looked back as they defeated the Raymond High School Rangers 37-0 Friday night.

Freddie Byrd III completed 15-of-23 passes for 146 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Treveon Miles had five catches for 70 yards and two scores. Anthony Thomas led the Wildcats’ defense with 11 tackles.

Wilkinson County (2-0) hosts Heidelberg High School Friday at 7 p.m.

Jefferson County 21, Amite County 0

LIBERTY — Despite being shut out in the second half, the Jefferson County High School Tigers beat the Amite County High School Trojans 21-0 Friday night.

Domonique Gaines had a 9-yard touchdown run and Gailrontae Fells added a 10-yard TD run in the first quarter. Javarious Austin scored on a 38-yard run early in the second quarter. Jaheime Herrington had seven carries for 65 yards to go with five tackles, one and a half sacks and one interception.

Jefferson County (1-1) plays at South Deltaat 7 p.m. Friday.

North Pike 54, Franklin County 23

MEADVILLE — North Pike High School quarterback Alijah Martin accounted for 395 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns as the Jaguars cruised to a 54-23 win over the Franklin County High School Bulldogs Friday night.

Martin completed 14-of-23 passes for 241 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also had nine carries for 155 yards and three touchdowns. The bright spot for Franklin County’s offense was quarterback Jaquan Brown, who ran for 140 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown despite going 5-for-15 for 55 yards and two picks.

Franklin County (0-3) will look for its first win of the season this Friday at 7 p.m. when the Bulldogs host Lumberton High School.
