VIDALIA — For three quarters, the Vidalia High School Vikings had their share of problems moving the ball on Delhi High School and had just seven points to show for it.
By the time their offense finally got in a rhythm in the fourth quarter, it was too little, too late as the Bears held on for a 40-27 victory over the Vikings at Dee Faircloth Viking Stadium.
“We just played a terrible game, and we played a great team with a great quarterback (Brandon Williams),” Vidalia head coach Dee Faircloth said. “He could run. He could throw. He could even kick. He put on a show.”
Faircloth said that Delhi’s receivers were able to use their height advantage over the Vikings’ defensive backs. Delhi took a 6-0 lead after one quarter of play and increased its lead to 22-7 by halftime. And every time Vidalia tried to rally late in the game, the Bears had an answer.
“Our coverage wasn’t real good. We missed tackles. Our (DBs) are about 5-2. They were able to exploit that,” Faircloth said.
Despite scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter, Faircloth said the offense was a victim of dropped passes and overthrown receivers.
“Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. We’ll just have to regroup. It was a tough night to be a Viking,” Faircloth said.
Vidalia (1-1) plays at Homer High School at 7 p.m. Friday.
