CENTREVILLE — The Centreville Academy Tigers would not let a lengthy weather delay nor a good Central Private School team mess up their homecoming festivities Friday night.
In what was a surprising defensive contest that would require overtime, the Tigers prevailed 16-8 over a Rebels team that, just like last year, took a 3-1 record into this match-up.
Lightning delayed the start of the game for well over an hour. And once it finally got under way, the defenses took over. Both teams scored a touchdown and added a two-point conversion in the first half, but neither team was able to find the end zone in the second half.
The Tigers broke the tie with a TD and a two-point conversion to go up 16-8 and then their defense rose to the occasion one more time, keeping Central Private (3-2) out of the end zone.
Centreville Academy (3-2) next plays at Bowling Green School in Franklinton, La. Kickoff this Friday is at 7 p.m.
WCCA 30, Claiborne Academy 0
HAYNESVILLE, La. — Senior quarterback D’mario Weathersby ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries as the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams defeated the Claiborne Academy Rebels 30-0 Friday night in an MAIS 8-Man football game.
The game was called with 1:49 remaining in the fourth quarter as lightning was rapidly approaching Haynesville. This was the second win in a row for WCCA while Claiborne Academy dropped to 1-4. Just last year, these two teams were opponents in District 3-A.
Weathersby got the Rams on the board at the 4:06 mark of the second quarter on a seven-yard touchdown run. He then scored on a 38-yard run late in the third quarter for a 22-0 lead.
In between those scores, Roderick Bailey picked up a fumble and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown and Hunter Gaines’ first of three two-point conversion runs gave WCCA a 14-0 lead with 6:48 left in the third quarter.
Weathersby also went 3-for-8 passing for 70 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown pass to R.J. Fisher with 5:06 remaining in the ball game. Gaines had 11 carries for 52 yards while Fisher had two catches for 50 yards.
WCCA (2-2) begins Division 4 play Friday at 7 p.m. when it plays at Tensas Academy.
Simpson Academy 54, Cathedral 20
MENDENHALL — Caleb Garner and Michael Winstead combined for 200 rushing yards and four touchdowns as the MAIS Class AAAA Simpson Academy Cougars defeated the Class AAA Cathedral Green Wave 54-20 Friday night.
Garner had nine carries for 109 yards and two touchdowns while Winstead had seven carries for 91 yards and two scores for Simpson Academy (3-2), which went up 20-0 before Cathedral broke through early in the second quarter.
The Cougars would end up scoring 28 points to just 13 for the Green Wave for a commanding 41-13 halftime lead. Their defense for the most part stymied Cathedral’s offense, holding the Green Wave to 289 total yards.
J.T. Taylor went just 5-for-13 passing for 71 yards, including a 34-yards touchdown pass to Colby Passman. Taylor also had a 24-yard TD run, but was limited to 65 yards rushing on 13 carries. Tyriek Lee led the team in rushing with 82 yards on just four carries, including a 61-yard TD run late in the third quarter.
Cathedral (3-1) will take on yet another Class AAAA opponent this Friday at 7 p.m. when it plays host to Copiah Academy.
