Jefferson County stuns Terry High in overtime and other MHSAA games

TERRY — Led by Domonique Gaines’ two touchdowns, the MHSAA Class 3A Jefferson County High School Tigers did the unthinkable Friday night as they stunned the Class 6A Terry High School Bulldogs on the road 14-12 in overtime.

Gaines finished with 171 yards on 23 carries. His second touchdown of the game was in overtime and the ensuing two-point conversion gave the  Tigers a 14-6 lead.

The Bulldogs scored a touchdown on their possession, but the two-point conversion attempt was no good and the Tigers pulled off the upset.

Jefferson County jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on Gaines’ first score of the night before Terry (4-1) tied the game in the second quarter.

With the win, the Tigers went undefeated on their three-game road trip going into their bye week.

Jefferson County (3-1) next plays on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. when they being Region 7-3A play at home against rival Port Gibson High School.

Lawrence County 28, Franklin County

MONTICELLO — Tae Cole led Lawrence County High School’s rushing attack with 192 yards and one touchdown on just seven carries as the MHSAA Class 4A Cougars shut out the Class 3A Franklin County High School Bulldogs 28-0 Friday night.

Cole’s biggest run of the game was an 82-yard touchdown run with 3:45 to go in the third quarter. That gave Lawrence County (4-1) a 21-0 lead.

The Cougars’ defense also had a stellar performance, holding the Bulldogs to just three first downs and 107 yards of total offense.

Clay Wright had 13 carries for 42 yards while Jaquan Brown completed four of 11 passes for just 21 yards.

Franklin County (0-5) plays at defending Class 3A state champion Jefferson Davis County High School at 7 p.m. Friday.

St. Charles Catholic (La.) 21, Wilkinson County 6

LAPLACE, La. — The LHSAA Class 3A St. Charles Catholic High School Comets scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 21-6 win over the MHSAA Class 3A Wilkinson County High School Wildcats Friday night.

St. Charles Catholic (2-1) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter before Wilkinson County scored a touchdown in the second quarter. The conversion, however, was no good and the Wildcats trailed 7-6.

Wilkinson County (3-1) hosts Kemper County High School this Friday at 7 p.m.
