Wilkinson County shuts out Kemper County 49-0 and other MHSAA games

WOODVILLE — Wilkinson County High School junior quarterback Freddie Byrd III threw five touchdown passes as the host Wildcats shut out the visiting Kemper County High School Wildcats 49-0 Friday night.

Despite completing fewer than 50 percent of his passes (10 for 23) and for just 173 yards, Byrd was not picked off once. And his touchdown passes went to four different receivers.
DreQuan Cage has four catches for 84 yards and one touchdown. Treveon Miles has two receptions for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Terrell Coleman Jr. had two catches for 29 yards and one touchdown while Deshawn Winding had one catch for 19 yards and one touchdown.

Coleman was also Wilkinson County’s leading rusher with 86 yards on six carries. He also tied for the team lead in tackles with seven.
Khalil Ford, Lakendrick Johnson and Anthony Thompson combined for seven quarterback sacks.

Johnson also had five tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery. Ford added five tackles and one fumble recovery of his own.
Miles added a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown.

The host Wildcats jumped out to a 22-0 lead over the visiting Wildcats after one quarter of play and took a commanding 42-0 advantage into halftime.

Kemper County fell to 0-6 overall and is now 3-15 since going 15-1 overall and winning the Class 3A state championship just two seasons ago.

Wilkinson County (4-1) plays at Franklin County High School in the MHSAA Region 7-3A opener for both teams Friday at 7 p.m.

Natchez High 28, Wingfield 7

JACKSON — The Natchez High School Bulldogs got back to their winning ways with a 28-7 win on the road over the Wingfield High School Falcons in the Region 3-5A opener for both teams Friday night.

No other information on the game was available.

Natchez High (3-1, 1-0) hosts West Jones High School Friday at 7 p.m.

Jefferson Davis County 43, Franklin County 0

BASSFIELD — Jefferson Davis County High School scored on offense, defense and special teams as the defending Class 3A state champion Jaguars defeated the Franklin County High School Bulldogs 43-0 Friday night.

Malcolm Hartzog scored on a 49-yard punt return in the first quarter and the defense recorded a safety early in the third quarter. Hartzog also scored on a 51-yard run about a minute and a half after the safety.

The Jaguars (4-2) scored three touchdowns in the first five minutes and 35 second of the game to grab a 21-0 lead. Michael Carraway threw a 62-yard TD pass to Kyser Booth late in the second quarter as they took a 36-0 lead into halftime.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs for the second week in a row could not generate much of an offense. They had just three first downs, were held to minus-16 rushing yards and finished with only five yards of total offense. Clay Wright went 4-for-8 passing for 21 yards.

Franklin County (0-6) hosts Wilkinson County High School Friday at 7 p.m.
