ST. JOSEPH, La. — Even though the final score would indicate otherwise, the offenses for both Wilkinson County Christian Academy and Tensas Academy did not move the ball very effectively Friday night.
In their MAIS 8-Man Division 4 showdown, the Rams held on for a 30-28 win over the Chiefs, who were trying to distance themselves from the rest of the pack in the division standings.
D’mario Weathersby didn’t have his best game offensively, but on defense is where the senior quarterback/free safety came through for the Rams. At the WCCA 21-yard line, Tensas Academy had one last chance to win the game. But Weathersby intercepted a Carter Thompson pass in the end zone as time expired.
Roderick Bailey had 10 carries for 75 yards, including a six-yard touchdown run with 1:00 remaining in the fourth quarter that tied the game at 28-28. Weathersby added the two-point conversion run for a 30-28 lead.
Hunter Gaines had a couple of short touchdown runs for WCCA in the first half, the second of which gave the Rams a 16-14 lead with 7:20 left in the second quarter. R.J. Fisher had a 14-yard touchdown pass from Weathersby late in the third quarter, but the two-point conversion attempt was no good for a 22-14 Rams lead.
But that gave Tensas Academy (3-3, 2-1) new life. Chris Davis scored on a 63-yard run with 7:30 to go in the game and Morgan Lee scored on a four-yard run at the 2:58 mark to give the Chiefs a 28-22 lead.
Weathersby completed five of seven passes for 89 yards, but was held to 33 yards rushing on 20 carries. Defensively, he had seven tackles and one sack to go with the game-saving pick. Bailey also had one carry for 46 yards. Fisher led the Rams’ defense with 12 tackles and two sacks.
WCCA (3-2, 1-0) travels to Prentiss to take on Prentiss Christian School in the second of three straight road division games Friday at 7 p.m.
Bowling Green School 45, Centreville Academy 28
CENTREVILLE — The Bowling Green School Buccaneers overcame an early double-digit deficit to stun the Centreville Academy Tigers 45-28 Friday night.
Centreville Academy scored two touchdowns in the first six minutes of the game to grab a 14-0 lead and led Bowling Green 20-7 at the 10:23 mark of the second quarter before the Buccaneers responded in a big way.
Bowling Green (5-1) scored two touchdowns over a nearly three-and-a-half minute stretch of the second quarter to take a 21-20 lead with 4:01 left in the quarter. The Tigers answered with a touchdown and two-point conversion for a 28-21 lead with 19 seconds left before the Buccaneers scored on a field goal to make it a 28-24 game at halftime.
That would be the last time the Tigers would have the lead. The Buccaneers took the lead for good nearly midway through the third quarter at 30-28 and added to their lead from there.
Centreville Academy (3-3) next plays at Brookhaven Academy Friday at 7 p.m. in the Tigers’ MAIS District 4-AA opener.
