The scene at Bobby Marks Stadium after Adams County Christian School’s stunning 26-20 homecoming overtime upset win last Friday night over MAIS Class AAAA Oak Forest Academy was one of joy, excitement, and relief.

At least that’s how it was on the home side of the stands for those who cheered on the Class AAA Rebels. For those who made the trip from Amite, Louisiana, to root for the then-undefeated Yellow Jackets, it was one of shock, despair and how a sure victory turned into defeat.

“It was a fun game for the fans,” ACCS head coach David King said. “A lot of stress involved.”

How the game went into overtime is a miracle in itself. John Henry White scored on a one-yard run and Kaden Slocum threw to Preston Hendry for the two-point conversion that gave Oak Forest a 20-14 lead with just 45 seconds left in regulation.

“We had a good kickoff return. Had a couple of good plays. Three long passes (by Sterling Yarbrough),” King said.

And that included Yarbrough’s nine-yard touchdown pass to Glaston Magee with two seconds left. However, the extra point was blocked.

Jakarius Caston threw a 10-yard TD pass to Kemari Clark and the defense stopped the Yellow Jackets on 4th-and-1 at the Rebels’ 1-yard line to preserve the win.

“Every one was a key play. There were penalties and turnovers, but that’s because it was two good teams,” King said. “We made some mistakes, but so did they. We made some mistakes, but the kids prevailed.”

As to how the players felt about beating a team of Oak Forest’s caliber, King said, “We’ve got a team that’s got a chip on its shoulder. They weren’t expected to do much.”

King said the win over a team from a higher classification was also big for the Rebels in the Class AAA power point ratings.

Now the 5-0 Rebels get ready to play at Silliman Institute in their District 5-AAA opener Friday at 7 p.m. King said that the Wildcats were picked to be the favorites to win the district championship this season.

“We’re pretty beat up. But we can’t dwell on it,” King said. “It’s the biggest game of the season. It’s the next game. We have to have a great week of practice.”
