NATCHEZ — Services for Hazel Vernell “Nell” Newman, 89, of Natchez, who died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018 at Merit Health Natchez, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Laird Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Doug Broome officiating.

Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. Monday until time of service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Newman was born Jan. 28, 1929 in Franklin Parish, La., the daughter of Lawrence and Suzie Andings Hedgepeth. She was a devoted wife and loving mother who enjoyed reading, all forms of arts and crafts, and most of all caring for extended lines of family and friends.

Mrs. Newman was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Woodrow “Preacher” Newman; her daughter, Barbara Nell “Bobbie” Parsons; her son, Douglas Woodrow “Doug” Newman; and two grandsons, Alan Melton and Brandon Blackmon.

Survivors include one daughter, Christi Elaine “Chris” Benner; one son, Mark Newman and wife, Nora, all of Natchez; eight grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family requests In lieu of flowers, that a memorial of your choice be made in remembrance of “Miss Nell” and thank you to all who knew and shared in the wonderful life of Mrs. Newman.
