NATCHEZ — A Natchez man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday for shooting at his sister’s boyfriend following disputes that occurred between July and November 2017.

Karl Thomas Ellis Jr., 22, of 17 Campbell Road, was indicted on charges of aggravated assault and grand larceny. However, he was only tried on the aggravated assault charge, officials said.

The charges stem from a July 2017 incident in which Ellis allegedly took a 1985 Monte Carlo belonging to the boyfriend of his sister without permission, said Lt. Cal Green of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

The vehicle was later located in the parking lot of the Red Carpet Inn on D’Evereux Drive, several miles from where it was last seen, and Green said witnesses and family members reported that Ellis had taken the vehicle.

After the incident, the car’s owner asked Ellis’ father to repair the car and it was not repaired so several months later, in October 2017, the car’s owner again asked Ellis’ father to repair the car.

Ellis was at the residence when the car’s owner came to get the vehicle and during an argument, Ellis reportedly went to his car, pulled out a gun and began firing at the car’s owner.

The victim was not injured. The vehicle, however, was hit during the shooting, Green said.

Ellis was sentenced to 20 years in prison with credit for time served with Sixth District Circuit Court Judge Forrest “Al” Johnson presiding.
