NATCHEZ — Adams County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Operations Group deputies arrested two men Tuesday after deputies say the men conducted a drug deal in the parking lot of the McDonald’s restaurant on Seargent S. Prentiss Drive.
Deputies said they arrested Randy Smith, who faces charges of possession of a schedule II drug with intent to deliver, careless driving, resisting arrest, tampering with evidence and felony eluding.
Deputies said they later arrested Jawan Hawkins, who faces charges of possession of a schedule II drug with intent to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia.
After witnessing the transaction, deputies said both suspects left the parking lot in separate vehicles, and the agents attempted to stop one driver who failed to yield to blue lights and sirens.
The driver, Smith, deputies said, bailed out of the vehicle after a short chase and ran into a wooded area while an agent pursued him on foot.
Deputies apprehended Smith after chasing him a short distance and searched the area where deputies said they found approximately 2 grams of crack cocaine that Smith had attempted to hide and destroy.
Smith was transported to Adams County Jail.
Agents later executed a search warrant at Hawkins’ residence at Camelot Apartments where they said Hawkins was standing in the kitchen when deputies arrived and fled to the bathroom where he attempted to flush cocaine down the toilet.
Deputies said they retrieved 28 grams of cocaine from the toilet and found a set of digital scales and Pyrex dishes on the kitchen counter that are believe to have been used to cook cocaine into crack cocaine.
Deputies said they further searched the apartment and seized $1,078 and a 1997 Toyota Tacoma.
