NATCHEZ — First Baptist Church Natchez plans to celebrate Christmas in a big way Saturday and Sunday with the church’s annual musical production titled “Still.”

Derrick Burt, music director for the church, said the production was put together in house by creating unique arrangements for a mix of traditional and contemporary Christian music and hymns.

“We’re conveying the birth of Christ from a child to his resurrection, and He will show up at the end as a grown up,” Burt said. “The performance is age appropriate for any one from 5 to 105.”

The title, “Still,” Burt said, is taken from a song titled “Still the Lamb” that is included in the program and will be sung by Roberta Duhs, whom Burt said was trained at Belhaven University and Jackson State University. Duhs, Burt said, has a beautiful soprano voice.

This year’s production will include a full orchestra and ballet dancers from Ballet Magnificat of Jackson, Burt said, and the church constructed a stage in the sanctuary to accommodate the 21 dancers.

The orchestra will consist of 30 musicians, some from First Baptist Church of Jackson, others from the Natchez area and students from Jackson State University.

Some of the songs that will be included in the production are “All is Well,” which is a hymn that will be accompanied this year by a ballet dancer and “Sing We Now of Christmas,” which is a traditional hymn performed with a futuristic style arrangement, Burt said.

A professional lighting crew will be manning the lights, Burt said, and daycare will be provided for children 3 and younger.

Everyone is invited to the free productions at 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the First Baptist Church Sanctuary, 150 D’Evereux Drive, Natchez.

“It’s going to be really good,” Burt said. “Something that will start the Christmas season for the community and hopefully point them in the right direction for the season. It is a gift of love for the season from our church.”
