Round up of area high school basketball action

MONTEREY — Andy Gray led Monterey High School with a game-high 20 points and Allie Lipsey added 15 points as the Lady Wolves used a big first half to defeat the Cathedral High School Lady Green Wave 49-33 Friday night at the Monterey High School Tournament.

Monterey dominated Cathedral on both ends of the court for much of the first half, especially the second quarter. The Lady Wolves had a 12-5 lead after one quarter of play before outscoring the Lady Green Wave 22-7 in the second quarter for a commanding 34-12 halftime advantage.

Cathedral was able to cut into that deficit in the third quarter, but still trailed by 16 points, 39-23, at the end of the quarter. However, the Lady Green Wave was unable to keep its momentum going in the fourth quarter as both teams scored 10 points.

Adrianna Rojo led the Lady Green Wave with 11 points and Ryleigh Probst added 10 points.

Cathedral (3-4) will hit the road to Madison to take on Madison-Ridgeland Academy Monday at 6 p.m. Monterey (8-3) plays host to LaSalle High School Monday at 6 p.m.

Monterey boys 45, Cathedral 24

MONTEREY — The Monterey High School Wolves capped off Day 2 of the Monterey High School Tournament with an emphatic 45-24 win over the Cathedral High School Green Wave Friday night.

Led by Trey Boyd and Hunter Lipsey, Monterey led Cathedral 13-4 at the end of the first quarter and 29-11 at halftime. Boyd led all scorers with 19 points and Lipsey contributed with 15 points. Those were the only two players to score in double figures for either team.

Sam Mosby led the Green Wave with seven points while Clayton Devening finished with five points.

Cathedral (1-5) plays at Madison-Ridgeland Academy Monday at 6 p.m. Monterey (no record given) hosts LaSalle High School Monday at 6 p.m.

Natchez High boys 68, Jefferson County 43

FAYETTE — Seven players for Natchez High School scored at least six points as the Bulldogs rolled to a 68-43 win over the Jefferson County High School Tigers Friday night.

Natchez High was led by Travon Jackson, who finished with a game-high 16 points. Charles Credit poured in 12 points for the Bulldogs, who put the game out of reach with a 17-6 advantage in the third quarter for a 51-30 lead.

Tyreke Washington had eight points while Victor Lassiter and Jermaine Proby scored seven points each for the Bulldogs.

Natchez High (3-1) hosts Wilkinson County High School Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Jefferson County (no record given) doesn’t play again until Friday when it hosts Amite County High School at 7:30 p.m.

Natchez High girls 59, Jefferson County 36

FAYETTE — Candi Gray scored a game-high 16 points and the Natchez High School Lady Bulldogs shut out Jefferson County High School in the third quarter on their way to a 59-36 win over the Lady Tigers Friday night.

Natchez High led Jefferson County in what was a competitive first half 37-27 at halftime. That would be the closest the Lady Tigers would get as the Lady Bulldogs outscored them 19-0 in the third quarter for a 56-27 lead.

Kelsey McNeal, Tremecia Proby, and Kya Singleton had seven points each for the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Tigers were led by Brittany Goldsberry with 14 points.

Natchez High (4-3) plays host to Wilkinson County High School Tuesday at 6 p.m. Jefferson County (3-3) next plays on Friday at 6 p.m. at home against Amite County High School.

Tensas High boys 56, Vidalia 44

ST. JOSEPH, La. — RayJay Ransom led Vidalia High School with a game-high 18 points, but it was not enough as the Vikings lost to the Tensas High School Panthers 56-44 Friday night at the Tensas High School Tournament.

A back-and-forth first quarter ended with Tensas High ahead by just two points, 20-18. Then Vidalia went cold from the field in the second quarter, scoring just four points and going into halftime down 33-22. The Panthers eventually pulled away thanks to a 16-10 advantage in the third quarter for a 49-32 lead.

Vidalia (1-3) returns to action Tuesday when it host Madison Parish High School at 7:30 p.m.

Tensas High girls 64, Vidalia 42

ST. JOSEPH, La. — The Tensas High School Lady Panthers outscored Vidalia High School in all four quarters as they defeated the Lady Vikings 64-42 Friday night at the Tensas High School Tournament.

Tensas High jumped out to a 16-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and had a 15-12 edge in the second quarter to take a 31-23 lead over Vidalia into halftime. The second half was more of the same as the Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Vikings 16-10 in the third quarter and 17-9 in the fourth quarter.

Jamiya Smith led the Lady Vikings with 18 points and Keede Lutcher chipped in with eight points.

Vidalia (1-3) hosts Madison Parish High School Tuesday at 6 p.m.
