NATCHEZ — Now that Christmas is over, it’s time for several local and area high school basketball coaches to figure out what kind of team they have with the district portion of their schedules in the near future.
Two schools, Ferriday High School and Block High School, have already begun district play. Yet it’s also that time where these teams will face many of the best teams from Mississippi and Louisiana. It’s holiday tournament time.
Natchez High School will be playing at the Hattiesburg Holiday Tournament. The 8-2 Bulldogs will take on MHSAA Class 3A Jefferson Davis County High School today at 4 p.m., followed by the 8-6 Lady Bulldogs taking on the Lady Tigers of host Hattiesburg High School at 6 p.m.
Cathedral High School is one of two local/area teams that will be playing at the Amite School Center Christmas Tournament in Liberty. Both the Lady Green Wave and Green Wave will be going up against Central Hinds Academy today with the girls game at 1 p.m. and the boys game at 3 p.m.
Centreville Academy is also participating in that tournament, but details of the schedule were unavailable Wednesday.
Wilkinson County Christian Academy was also scheduled to play in the ASC Christmas Tournament, but Lady Rams head coach Mike McGraw said on Tuesday that because several members of the Rams squad were ill, both teams had to drop out.
Several teams from Concordia Parish as well as Block High School will be playing in the Sicily Island Tournament that starts today.
The Vidalia High School Lady Vikings will take on the Franklin Parish High School at 1 p.m. The 6-8 Delta Charter School Lady Storm will look to end a four-game losing streak when they the General Trass High School Lady Panthers at 2:20 p.m.
The 5-7 Vidalia High School Vikings will take on the struggling Block High School Bears at 3:40 p.m.
The Delta Charter School Storm goes up against the Sicily Island High School Tigers at 5 p.m.
The Ferriday High School Lady Trojans don’t play in this tournament until Friday when they take on the Tensas High School Lady Panthers at 4 p.m. That is also the case for the 13-4 Block High School Lady Bears as they face off with Delta Charter at 5:20 p.m. that day.
The 6-8 Ferriday High School Trojans take on the Lincoln Preparatory School Panthers today at 1 p.m. at the Sterlington Tournament in Monroe, La.
Wilkinson County High School will play in the McComb Invitational Tournament that starts on Friday. The Lady Wildcats will take on the East Marion High School Lady Eagles at 10:15 a.m. and the Wildcats go up against the Pelahatchie High School Chiefs at 11:30 a.m. that day.
One tournament that will not take place this week is the Jefferson County High School Holiday Tournament. Tigers head coach Marcus Walton said last Friday that due to a lack of teams available, the tournament was canceled.
