GALLMAN — Samuel Merriett scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 35th minute of the second half, as the Adams County Christian School Rebels rallied to defeat the Copiah Academy Colonels 4-3 Friday afternoon.

Copiah Academy took a 2-0 lead on goals in the 15th minute and the 19th minute of the first half, but that lead didn’t last as long as the Colonels would have hoped for.

Merriett scored his first goal of the match in the 20th minute of the first half to cut the lead in half. Then in the 39th minute, Tripp Cotten put a shot in the back of the net for ACCS to tie it a 2-2 at halftime.

“Our guys game out and never gave up, never quit,” ACCS head coach Jimmy Allgood said. “They went up 2-0. We scored that goal right before half.”
Even though the Colonels retook the lead at 3-2 in the 20th minute of the second half, it was apparent that the Rebels had momentum on their side. Nolan Owens made the game-tying goal just two minutes later.

“We played very good aggressive trapping and defense in the second half and that created several opportunities,” Allgood said. “Our guys dominated the second half.”

Goalkeeper Cody Brown also came through for the Rebels with 16 saves.

ACCS (5-2) returns to action next Monday at 3 p.m. when it hosts Brookhaven Academy in an MAIS Division III South, District 4 match. The Rebels are currently 3-1 in district play.
