NATCHEZ — A Natchez house was heavily damaged in a Saturday morning blaze, fire officials said.

The house at Brenham Avenue and Minor Street was approximately 75 percent destroyed in the fire that was reported at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, said Ventris Green, acting Natchez fire chief.

Green said firefighters had the fire under control within approximately 25 minutes of arriving and stayed on the scene for approximately two to two-and-a-half hours.

Green said it appeared the fire started on the backside, second story of the house where an addition had been made.

No one was at home at the time of the fire and investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire, Green said.

Freeman Reason owns the house, said Jeremy Houston, Reason’s grandson.

Houston said his grandfather is staying with family for the time being until he can find a more permanent place to stay.

Houston said members of the community, including Natchez Mayor Darryl Grennell and Ward 4 Alderwoman Felicia Bridgewater-Irving, reached out to offer support after the fire.

“This community stands strong,” Houston said. “We’re still standing strong. Any help and support and prayers they want to offer, we greatly appreciate it and hope we can do the same when something happens to someone else.”

Houston said his grandfather is in need of clothing and anyone who would like to make donations can reach him at 601-597-2112 or at Miss Lou Heritage Group & Tours, 199 St. Catherine St.
