NATCHEZ — Several shots were fired Saturday afternoon on Dumas Drive, officials said, injuring one man in the leg and startling several nearby residents.

Just before 2 p.m. Saturday, Natchez Police Department officers responded to a shots-fired call near the Cambridge Heights Apartments, where officers said they found a young male subject who had been struck in the leg by a bullet.

On the scene, police also found an unoccupied vehicle, a 2015 Nissan Altima, with shot out windows and bullet holes, Natchez Chief of Police Walter Armstrong said.

“The victim was standing outside the apartments when a red pickup truck with black rims bearing a Lakeside Ford tag came through with three to four black males inside, firing from the vehicle,” Armstrong said. “We believe someone may have shot back at the vehicle based on the location of the bullet casings, though neither the victim nor any witnesses said they returned fire.”

Armstrong said the victim was treated and released from Merit Health Natchez, and the victim told police he did not recognize anyone in the vehicle and that the truck had tinted windows.

Nearby resident, Nakeysha Watkins, said she lives within 10 steps of her cousin’s house on Dumas Drive, where her 13-year-old son was when she heard several gunshots.

“I heard one shot first,” Watkins said, “and my kids came running to the house from outside in the field, and we laid down on the floor.”

Watkins said she didn’t see anything happen, but saw the car with shot out windows in front of her cousin’s house and went over to see if her son was alright.

As she sat on her cousin’s porch watching police officers work on the scene, Watkins said she hid her face when she saw police officers taking pictures, after which an officer came to her and recorded her information.

Watkins later posted two videos on social media after the incident. In her post, she expressed feelings of outrage saying she believed she had been treated like a criminal instead of being asked what happened.

“(The officer) should have been questioning me, but he didn’t question me about anything,” Watkins said. “He recorded me with his personal phone. … He asked for my name my birthday and how many kids I have. He never asked me if I saw anything. … He threatened to take my son and me to the station if I didn’t answer him. … Residents don’t want to be treated like criminals when we’re just trying to see what is going on.”

Armstrong said officers are issued work phones and using those phones to record statements is a common practice.

“I’ve called the officers and talked to them,” Armstrong said. “They were just out there doing their job.”

Armstrong said officers are actively searching for the truck in question and investigators are reviewing surveillance footage of the incident.

“Anyone with any information about the vehicle or its occupants should call the Natchez Police Department or crime stoppers,” Armstrong said. “We will be checking video footage to try and locate these individuals, and we’ve also increased patrol in the area.”
