NATCHEZ — Just when it looked like Monday afternoon’s varsity boys’ soccer match between cross-town rivals Adams County Christian School and Cathedral High School was headed toward overtime, the Rebels decided not to let that happen.
ACCS scored the game-winning point with 12 seconds left in the second half to give the Rebels a dramatic 2-1 win over the Green Wave in a key MAIS Division III South, District 4 match for both teams.
“It was a heartbreaking loss for us,” Cathedral head coach Dennis Hogue said. “It was back and forth. Both teams were at breakneck speed. Both teams played really well. It was an evenly-matched game. Either team could have won.”
ACCS took a 1-0 lead at halftime and it remained that way until Ty Bertelsen tied the match in the 20th minute of the second half after he won a race to the ball with the Rebels’ goalkeeper and scored from about 18 yards out.
“We talked about stiffing up our defense,” Hogue said. “The keeper was coming out and Ty was going toward the ball. It was a matter of who was going to get to it first.”
Then the outcome came down to which team would blink first. And that turned out to be the Green Wave. Goalkeeper Donovan Dear tried to make the save, but couldn’t quite stretch out far enough to do so.
“He laid out and tipped it and it still went in,” Hogue said. “Donovan made some great saves and some routine saves. He probably had in the two-dozen to 30 range. Their keeper probably had just as many saves.”
Cathedral (5-8, 5-3) plays host to ACCS for Senior Night on Monday, Feb. 11 with the varsity match at 5:30 p.m., by followed by the junior varsity match. ACCS (no records given) plays at district foe Brookhaven Academy today with the varsity match at 4:30 p.m., followed by the JV match.
