BROOKHAVEN — The Natchez High School Bulldogs split a pair of games at the Enterprise Tournament on Saturday, dropping the first game to host Enterprise Attendance Center 4-3 before routing Bogue Chitto High School 11-1 in four innings.
Natchez High’s loss to Enterprise could best be summed up in one word — inexplicable. The Bulldogs had eight hits to just one for the Yellow Jackets, Paul Hargrave walked just three batters in three innings, and the defense committed only two errors.
Both teams scored two runs in the first inning and after a scoreless second inning, Natchez High took the lead with one run in the top of the third. However, Enterprise rallied for two runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead.
And somehow that 4-3 score would stand the rest of the game as the Bulldogs were unable to get the key hits they needed over the final three innings.
Hargrave was saddled with the loss despite striking out four and allowing just one hit in his three innings. Brad Dean pitched two scoreless innings and strike out three.
Jakel Barnes went 2-for-2 with a double, Lionell Minor was 2-fo-3 with two runs scored, Travon Henry was hit by a pitch and later scored a run, and Hargrave drove in all three runs.
The second game was close for three innings before Natchez High exploded for 10 runs in the top of the fourth inning to take an 11-1 lead and that would be all after Bogue Chitto failed to score in the bottom of the fourth and was run-ruled.
Devin Winchester was the winning pitcher after allowing one unearned run on two hits with nine strikeouts, two walks, and one hit batter.
Hargrave led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, one RBI, and two runs scored. Mackey also had a double while Winchester, Dekaron McGruder, and Jamel Myles each drove in two runs.
Tristan Buffington was charged with the loss for the Bobcats after giving up nine runs, eight of them earned, on seven hits and four walks to go with three strikeouts in three and one-third innings. One of the two hits for Bogue Chitto was a double by Owen Anderson.
Natchez High (2-1) hosts Cathedral High School for a varsity doubleheader Tuesday at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
