JACKSON — Natchez High School’s varsity baseball team finally got its MHSAA Region 6-5A portion of its schedule going as the Bulldogs took on the Forest Hill High School Patriots Friday afternoon.
And it did not take long for Natchez High to impose its will as the Bulldogs scored 14 runs in the top of the first inning en route to a 20-0 blowout victory over the Forest Hill Patriots in just three innings.
After having its home varsity doubleheader called off due to Forest Hill head coach Avery Mason being hospitalized on Tuesday, Natchez High had to wait another three days to take the field and face a region opponent (the Bulldogs did face Cathedral High School that afternoon and won in comeback fashion 16-5).
Devin Winchester was a force both on the field and at the plate. He pitched all three innings and in the process threw a no-hitter with eight strikeouts. He also went 2-for-2 with a triple and was walked twice.
The Bulldogs added six runs in the top of the second inning to complete the scoring. They ended up with 14 hits and surprisingly, neither team committed a single error.
Travon Henry had a big game at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, and three runs batted in. Zehalin Cornett was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and he was walked twice. Jaylin Davis and Roderick Simpson each had a double for the Bulldogs.
Natchez High (5-3, 1-0) hosts Brookhaven High School on Tuesday, March 26 at 6 p.m. at Chester Willis Field.
As to when Natchez High and Forest Hill will take on each other again, head coach Dan Smith said the Bulldogs and the Patriots are tentatively scheduled to play on Tuesday, April 9 at 6 p.m. for one varsity game at Chester Willis Field.
