VIDALIA — Dylan LaPrairie pitched five and one-third solid innings and Brett Walsworth belted two doubles as the Vidalia High School Vikings rolled to a 9-3 win over the Mangham High School Dragons Thursday afternoon in an LHSAA District 2-2A game.
LaPrairie allowed three runs, all of them earned, on nine hits with nine strikeouts and just two walks to earn the victory. Nick Melton came on in relief and gave up no runs and two hits over one and two-thirds innings.
“Dylan did a good job on the mound holding them in check and giving us some opportunities to score some big runs,” Vidalia head coach Michael Norris said. “Our defense did great. We had one error on a slow roller to second base. But we made the plays. When they hit the ball, we caught the ball.”
The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before Mangham struck for two runs in the top of the second inning for what turned out to be the Dragons’ only lead of the game.
Vidalia tied the game in the bottom of the second inning and then took the lead for good with a two-run rally in the bottom of the third inning. The Vikings put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 8-2.
“Brett had a double and CJ (Chatman) had a double in that (fourth) inning,” Norris said. “It was an all-around good effort in that inning.”
The Vikings scored their last run of the game in the bottom of the fifth for a 9-2 advantage. The Dragons tallied their final run in the top of the sixth.
Walsworth ended up gong 2-for-4 with those two doubles while Adam Eames was 2-for-3 with a triple. Chatman was 2-for-3 and LaPrairie helped his own cause by going 2-for-4.
“Hitting’s contagious. We had a good practice (Wednesday). We had a couple of hits early,” Norris said.
Vidalia (13-9, 5-3) plays at Mangham to wrap up this three-game district series Saturday at 3 p.m., weather permitting.
