LACASSINE, La. — Avery Cupit pitched a complete-game three-hitter and struck out 11 batters to lead the No. 17 seed Monterey High School Lady Wolves to a 4-2 win over the No. 16 seed Lacassine High School Lady Cardinals Friday afternoon in the bi-district round of the LHSAA Class B Playoffs.

Cupit gave up two runs, only one of them earned, and walked just one batter. The only player for Lacassine who got to her was Giselle Fuentes, who went 2-for-4 with a home run.

“Avery pitched well. She hit her spots. She had good command of her pitches. Moved the ball around well,” Lady Wolves head coach Cary Shivley said.

Monterey scored two runs in the top of the first inning and maintained its 2-0 lead until Lacassine (17-11) tallied one run in the bottom of the third inning. The Lady Wolves responded with one run in the top of the third inning and another run in the top of the fifth.

“I was proud of my girls. They were focused. They did a good job at the plate. They did a good job in the field,” Shivley said. “They were very business-like.”

The Lady Cardinals scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it a 4-2 game, but Cupit would not let them get any closer.

The Lady Wolves finished with 12 base hits. They were led by Andy Gray, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles, and Harlie Murray, who was 3-for-5 with a double. Maddy Green and Hannah Hitt each were 2-for-4.

Monterey (8-11) will play at No. 1 seed Holden High School in the regional round on either Monday, April 15 or Tuesday, April 16 at a time to be determined.
