NATCHEZ — The Antioch Missionary Baptist Association County Layman’s third-annual Showcasing Your Wheels car show is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at AMB Association Unity Park, 416 Airport Road.
Organizers say plenty of cars will be on hand to compete for titles and prizes.
“It has been a great opportunity and pass time for some of our brothers and sisters,” said Michael Winn Sr., county layman director of the AMB Association and member of Pilgrim Baptist Church in Natchez. “We are just delighted to be able to sponsor this event and have a wholesome time for the community.”
Winn said he anticipates cars of all makes, models and years, as no particular requirements exist for the open car show.
The AMB Association is a conglomeration of some 40 predominantly black Baptist churches throughout the Miss-Lou under the moderation of the Rev. Melvin White, pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church of Natchez.
The primary function of the AMB Association, White said, is education of church lay member leaders and pastors in theological training.
Winn said the annual car show is a great fundraiser to help the AMB Association with its missions, and it also is a great outreach mission to the community.
“This is more of a social fundraising event for the layman’s ministry, which is part of the AMB Association,” Winn said. “We go out and involve other people from within the community. The car show is really an opportunity for us to reach out to the community, reach out to other laymen, other men and brothers and sisters within the community to showcase their car or vehicle. For us it is an opportunity to minister to them.”
Winn said the car show gives AMB members a chance to socialize with individuals outside of the church.
“Sometimes there can be a break through, and it gives you an opportunity to witness,” Winn said.
The pubic is invited to attend the event for free and look at the cars and enjoy refreshments and wares from numerous vendors on the grounds of the park, Winn said.
Car owners can still register to show their cars, Winn said, with a $25 registration fee, by calling 213-903-7943 or 601-446-7406 or 601-597-0607.
The event also will feature a blessing of the boats, with no registration required for the boats on Unity Lake in the park.
“The need for our watercrafts to float on the water and sea safely and under the spiritual protection of calm waters is always a major concern,” Winn said.
The event, Winn said, is sure to be a wholesome fun time for the whole family.
“The whole thing with the car show is an outreach,” Winn said. “You might have people entering who might not be affiliated with the church but after they come a few years and see some of the others and the passion they have for Christ it enables us to draw others.”
In the event of rain, Winn said the car show would be rescheduled for April 27.
