Prep Tennis: Cathedral boys take 1st, girls 2nd; ACCS boys runners up in district

NATCHEZ — The Cathedral boys won the MAIS District 5-AAA Tennis Tournament and the Adams County Christian School boys were runners-up Monday afternoon at the Duncan Park tennis facility.

The Cathedral girls finished runners-up to the winner, Silliman Institute out of Clinton, Louisiana.

“The tournament went well today,” said Beth Foster, Cathedral head tennis coach. “This was the first super hot day that we have played.”

Foster said she was happy with the play of Annalyce Riley, who played Shelby Mason.

Mason went undefeated on the year, posting a perfect 5-0 record in singles play. Mason won Monday’s match 6-4, 6-4.

“It was a very good match to watch today,” Foster said.

ACCS head coach Nicole Gatson said she is proud of the way her mixed doubles team plays.

Yohan Thompson and Danyel Weir were undefeated on the year, 6-0.

“Their communication on the court is unbelievable,” Gatson said. “They have a game plan before every serve.”

Foster said she also is proud of the younger players on the Cathedral team.

“I have three starting eighth-graders: Grayson Guedon, Natalie Smith and Huddy Lees.

The next competition will be the south state tournament, which will be played Wednesday in Vicksburg at Halls Ferry Park.

The top players from 12 schools will compete at the south state tournament to find out who advances to the state tournament, which will be held May 8 at a site to be determined.

At the state tournament individual players will have a chance to become state champions in singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

A boys team and a girls team also will be crowned as state champions.
