NATCHEZ — Mt. Zion Chapel Church No. 2 is holding a cookout from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday to benefit all mothers of Natchez, organizers said.

Clarence Green, senior deacon of Mt. Zion Chapel Church No. 2, said he and fellow church members would begin cooking the food early Saturday morning on a vacant lot at Martin Luther King Jr. and High streets in Natchez and that people can start purchasing the food at 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Saturday’s annual cookout will include barbecue plates of chicken or ribs or chitlins, Green said.

“We have a half a chicken or ribs for $8, and the chitlin dinner is $10,” Green said. “They will get chicken (or meat of choice) baked beans, potato salad, a roll and a slice of cake.”

Green said people do not have to order in advance, but if people would like to order in advance they can call him at 601-597-6426, “and I’ll have it ready for them when they get there.”

All proceeds will go to the church’s annual Mother’s Day luncheon at 1 p.m. May 12 at the Natchez Community Center, 215 Franklin St.

“It is for all women and mothers who can come,” Green said. “We send invitations to all the churches. All we ask is a small donation. If you want to come … Let me know.”

At the May 12 luncheon, Green said, men of the church will serve the mothers aged 50 and older and the mothers younger than 50 will go through a buffet line.

The fundraising cookout is Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the corner of Martin Luther King and High streets. Costs are $8 for either a chicken or ribs plate and $10 for a chitlin plate. Delivery services for five or more orders are available.
