NATCHEZ — Tonight, the spirit of Woodstock will fill the City Auditorium.
Approximately 50 years after the famed music festival, the Natchez Festival of Music will celebrate what music historians regard as one of the pivotal moments of popular culture.
The evening of music starts at 7 tonight. Cost of admission is $25 for adults, $10 for students from kindergarten to college. The doors open at 6 p.m. A cash bar will be available.
“It will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this incredible music,” Festival of Music artistic director Jay Dean said.
Thirty-two music acts performed in White Plains, New York, over three days in August 1969.
Dean said Friday night’s performance will feature music from approximately 30 percent of the musical groups that played in the festival.
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Ritchie Havens, Arlo Guthrie, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, The Who, Jefferson Airplane and Creedence Clearwater Revival are just a few of the groups to be highlighted, Dean said.
“At the end of the show we will sing ‘Let the Sunshine In’ from the musical ‘Hair,’ “Dean said.
Mississippi Blues guitarist Vasti Jackson will play the music of Jimi Hendrix. Jackson will be coming to Natchez after playing in Germany.
“This guy literally plays all over the world, all the time — and he is from Mississippi,” Dean said. “He is outstanding.”
Dean said the evening will feature seven singers and seven instrumentalists, including a rhythm section and horns. Dean said many of the singers will dress in costume to evoke the music from 50 years ago.
“It will be a very exciting show — musically superb,” Dean said. “People are really going to love the show, no matter what age you are.”
