NATCHEZ — Natchez police officers charged a Natchez man with aggravated assault on Wednesday after they said he was shooting a gun at a woman and her children on Dumas Drive on May 14.
Natchez police officers said they received a call at 9:59 p.m. on May 14 from a woman who said an unknown person shot at her and her children.
“The 911 caller reported to Adams County Emergency dispatch that the person that shot at them had on all black with a silver mask on his/her face,” the police report states.
As police arrived, the suspect, who police said was hiding in a grassy area, came out of hiding.
“The suspect surrendered at which time officers noticed that the suspect had been also shot in the chest,” the police report states.
The suspect, Jerry Jamal Bates Jr. was transported to Merit Health Natchez for treatment and was transferred to a hospital in Jackson for further treatment.
On Wednesday, Bates was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated assault, the police report states, “manifesting extreme indifference to human life.”
Bates was given a medical recon to continue his medical treatments for his gunshot wound.
Police said the investigation is continuing on how Bates sustained his gunshot injury.
