NATCHEZ— Services for Nannie C. McClellan Fitzgerald, 87, of Fort Worth, Texas, formerly of Vidalia, who died Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at her residence, will be noon Friday at Zion Chapel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Birdon Mitchell Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow at the Natchez National Cemetery under the direction of Robert D. Mackel and Sons Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.
Mrs. Fitzgerald was born Jan. 16, 1932, the daughter of the Rev. Albert L. McClellan the Janie Pempleton McClellan.
She grew up in Durant and attended Long Branch Elementary School and Holmes County Training High School. She also attended Jackson State University where she received a bachelor of science degree in education. She was a member of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority. She later received her master’s degree in education from Alcorn State University.
Nan married her loving husband, Will T., in 1958 — they celebrated their 60thwedding anniversary in February of 2018.
She was an elementary school teacher for 37 years until her retirement. She taught at Brumfield Elementary in Natchez and Vidalia Upper Elementary School in Vidalia. She was very passionate about teaching and often encouraged younger adults to pursue teaching as a career. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.
She attended Zion Chapel A.M.E. Church in Natchez where she was a faithful and devoted member. She served as the pastor’s steward and as a member of the steward board of the church.
Other ministries included being a Sunday school teacher, a choir member, worked with the youth choir and was treasurer of the missionary society of the church.
Fitzgerald was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and four siblings.
Survivors include one daughter, Dr. Althea Lynnette “Lynn” Fitzgerald Alexis and husband, Alton, of Fort Worth; two grandchildren, Brian Fitzgerald Alexis and Brittany Gabrielle Alexis, both of Los Angeles; one stepson, Andrew Fitzgerald and wife, Delores, of Memphis, Tenn., and their children, Andrea Fitzgerald of Arlington, Texas, and Andrew Fitzgerald Jr. of Memphis; one sister-in-law, Althea Ford of Natchez; five siblings; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who loved her dearly.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association local chapter in Fort Worth: Alzheimer’s Association, 2630 W. Freeway, Suite 100, Fort Worth, TX 76102.
