NATCHEZ — Whether locals are shopping for handmade decorations or fresh groceries, Downtown Natchez will have both this weekend with the Summer Natchez Farmers market and the Second Saturday Arts Market.

The Summer Natchez Farmers market is open from 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday through August at the 100 block of South Commerce Street, where farmers, growers and food purveyors show off their fresh produce and homemade goodies, director Eddie Burkes said.

“We’ll have a wide variety of summer vegetables and fruit as well as all of our wonderful arts and crafts makers and those with jams and jellies, baked goods and honey and live entertainment,” Burkes said.

After exploring the fresh foods grown close to home, Downtown shoppers could venture a couple of blocks over to the Second Saturday Arts Market at 321 Franklin St., which is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The former Regions Bank building houses a variety of unique and original creations, not one of which can be found in any superstore, organizer Sarah Freeman said.

The art market, which began last October, opens the second Saturday of every month between March and December, Freeman said.

Shoppers enjoy discovering the beautiful and interesting rarities that are sold there each month, Freeman said, such as wooden bowls, knitted crocheted blankets and clothing, painted rocks from around the world, photography and oil paintings, pictures that move and more.

“Almost everything is made by hand, and it’s always the artists themselves who show their own work,” Freeman said.
