Millions in unclaimed property left in Adams County

NATCHEZ — Adams County residents have more than $2 million worth of unclaimed property and funds being held by the State Treasury of Mississippi.
The office of the State Treasurer’s website states that the state treasury is responsible for administering the Unclaimed Property Act.
The Unclaimed Property Act requires “holders” such as banks, credit unions, insurance companies, retail stores, utility companies and business associations to turn over any assets such as money, cash, checks or stocks that have been abandoned — meaning those entities had no contact with the property owners for a period of five years.
Adams County Chancery Clerk Brandi Lewis said the combined assets that are unclaimed by residents in Adams County have a total value of approximately $2.6 million.
“These funds come from umpteen different sources,” Lewis said. “… insurance proceeds, tax funds, deposits, court claims … you name it.”
Lewis said two links are posted on the Adams County website, the first of which includes an alphabetized list with the names of those who have property or funds being held by the state.
The second link is a form with instructions to claim those properties or funds, which can be claimed by the person’s whose name appears on the list or their heirs if that person is deceased, Lewis said.
“The state provides a list on the state treasurer’s website where people can claim what is theirs, though most people might not know it exists or where to find it,” Lewis said. “Because there is so much money there for Adams County, we thought it might be helpful if we provided the links on the Adams County website to make it easier for people to find.”
Those with questions may reach the office of the Mississippi State Treasurer at 601-359-3600 or by email to unclaimed@treasury.ms.gov, Lewis said.
