NATCHEZ — High school football season is not that far away and while a few teams have already gotten practice underway, most of them will hit their respective practice fields starting Monday.
Adams County Christian School, the 2018 MAIS Class AAA state champions, started its varsity football practice last Thursday while Class AA state runner-up Centreville Academy hit the practice field earlier in the week.
Practice for teams in the Mississippi High School Activities Association — Class 5A Natchez High School as well as Class 3A schools Franklin County High School, Jefferson County High School, and Wilkinson County High School — will get started on Monday.
Same goes for the schools in the Louisiana High School Athletics Association — Class 2A Vidalia High School and Ferriday High School as well as Class 1A Delta Charter School, Block High School, and Sicily Island High School.
MAIS 11-man football teams ACCS (now in Class 5A), Cathedral High School (now in Class 4A), Centreville Academy (now in Class 3A, the lowest of the four 11-man classifications) as well as 8-Man team Wilkinson County Christian Academy (now in Class 1A, the lowest of the two 8-man classifications) will each get their seasons underway on Friday, Aug. 23.
In the MHSAA, it can be a bit confusing as to when the season starts because of the classic games. For Class 3A team such as Franklin County, Jefferson County, and Wilkinson County, as well as 2A and 4A teams, the classic games can be played on either Thursday, Aug. 22 or Friday, Aug. 23 and the first game is on Friday, Aug. 30.
For Natchez High and other Class 5A as well as 1A and 6A teams, teams can have a choice of Aug. 22, 23 or 30 to play their classic games and the first game is not until Friday, Sept. 6. However, teams that play in these classic games have included them as part of their overall records.
Vidalia, Ferriday, Delta Charter, Block, and Sicily Island don’t begin their regular seasons until Friday, Sept. 6.
