NATCHEZ — The Adams County Board of Supervisors continued their pursuit of federal funding for an access road from Emerald Mound to the Natchez Trace Parkway and other possible improvements at the historic site during Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting.

Local attorney Walter Brown said the board agreed in 2008 to pursue construction of a safer access road from the Natchez Trace to the historic Native American mound and to relocate the existing county road.

At the time, the county received $1.1 Million from a Mississippi Department of Transportation Grant to purchase rights of way for the construction.

Brown said the board had previously sought a $750,000 grant for the project through the Federal Land Access Program and did not receive funding.

During Monday’s meeting, however, Brown suggested that the board adopt a resolution to reapply for the grant before an Oct. 15 deadline.

After the meeting, Adams County Attorney Scott Slover said the board would first need to acquire engineering plans before they could proceed with getting cost estimates on the project.

“In the end, you would have a new, relocated county road … as well as the access road approximately a mile from Emerald Mount into the Natchez Trace,” Brown said. “It’s a very worthy project.”

The supervisors unanimously approved a resolution to pursue the grant.

In other matters during Monday’s meeting of the Adams County Board of Supervisors, the board:

4 Hosted a public hearing for appeals to the 2018 tax roll.

4 Unanimously approved a resolution to submit an application for grant funding for roof repairs at the Adams County Courthouse.

4 Heard an announcement from Ser Seshs Ab Heter-C.M. Boxley about a Black and Blue Civil War Living History presentation on Oct. 26 at Historic Jefferson College.

4 Deferred payment of an invoice from the Natchez Adams County Recreation Commission in the amount of $20,836.34 until the next board meeting.
