FERRIDAY — Delta Charter’s team is starting to take shape for the fall football season that starts Sept. 6 at Delhi Charter.

Third-year Coach Blake Wheeler said the team is in its second week of practice and they have been practicing in pads since Aug. 8.

“It’s going pretty good so far,” Wheeler said, adding he is trying to get the players used to the fundamentals of the game, “blocking, tackling, lining up right on offense and defense, specialty teams.”

Senior Kavarius Whitehead is expected to start at quarterback, Wheeler said.

“He started at receiver last year,” Wheeler said. “As a sophomore he played quarterback, so he is not completely new to the position.”

Other top prospects are senior lineman Cole Beard on offense and on defense senior strong safety Chandler Harrison.

Peyton Roberts also is a strong quarterback and junior running back Tre Griffin is another standout of offense.

Wheeler said he hopes to have his team ready to face off against Delhi Charter in the season opener.

“They are a tough team,” Wheeler said of Delhi Charter. “They always have a good, tough, physical team. We look forward to the challenge.”

On Tuesday afternoon, the football team turned out in uniforms to shade trees beside the football field, which is behind the school to have team and individual photographs made for the season.

Players tossed footballs back and forth and joked with each other while waiting to have their pictures made.

The team members seemed to exhibit a bond before returning to the gym to change in to their practice uniforms for the afternoon’s practice in the hot humid weather.

“We are looking forward to a good season,” Wheeler said.
