NATCHEZ — Hunting season is just around the corner and plenty of hunters in the Miss-Lou are undoubtedly preparing their deer stands, sprucing up their duck blinds and looking forward to another successful hunting season.

Part of the preparations for many hunters is sure to include cleaning out the freezer from last year’s harvest to make room for this year’s harvest.

If you have leftovers from the previous year’s hunts taking up space in your freezer, consider donating those leftovers through the Hunters for the Hungry Clean Out Your Freezer Day.

“This event is specific to everybody who is about to start getting their camps ready and getting ready for hunting season,” said Judith Jones, organizer.

Each year for approximately 20 years, Hunters for the Hungry has held the Clean Out Your Freezer Day in the Miss-Lou.

On that day, organizers ask “the Miss Lou to donate what they have in their freezer to our local charities who service and help those in need in our community,” the organizer said.

Jones said charities that benefit from the program include the Guardian Shelter for Women and the Stewpot.

This year’s event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Natchez Sports Center.

“They will also be helping those unable to reach the donation location by sending a volunteer to pick up your donations,” organizers said.

“If it is hard for you to get out or if you need help or don’t have ice chests,” Jones said, “we are going to have volunteers who can go around town and come pick up your donation.”
