NATCHEZ — Natchez Police Department and the Adams County Sheriff’s Office held a joint meeting Wednesday morning to share information on recent shootings in Natchez, including a Tuesday night shooting and another on Friday night.

No one was injured in the latest shooting that occurred at approximately 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of West Stiers Lane, said Walter Armstrong, Natchez police chief.

“No one was hit. The house was hit,” Armstrong said of the Tuesday night shooting. “We had saturated that area, because we had gotten some intel of some activity in the area, so we had increased patrol over there in and out throughout the night.”

Despite the increased patrols, Armstrong said officers did not witness Tuesday night’s shooting.

The resident of the house said he heard shooting and looked out the door but did not see anyone.

“We believe this a retaliation situation that is going on perhaps from previous incidents that happened inside of last year,” Armstrong said. “Individuals who want to take the law in their hands.”

Also believed to be a possible retaliation crime, Armstrong said, was a Friday night shooting in which a bullet passed through the door of a passing vehicle on Inez Street and struck the driver in the leg.

The driver caught an ambulance near Walmart and was later transported to a Jackson hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.

“We (the NPD and the ASCO) are meeting and comparing notes and that’s what we did today,” Armstrong said Wednesday afternoon. “We will be doing even more of that as time goes on. We have devised a plan to increase patrols in those areas.”

Armstrong asked for citizen input on the crimes.

“We need citizens more than anything, people who believe they may be targeted or who have heard of individuals who what to perpetrate harm to them to come forward so we have a chance to head it off before it happens,” Armstrong said. “We don’t have any motive, but it could be some sort of retaliation for some previous incidents.”
