LAUREL — Izzy Dupre had a hat trick and Olivia Moore added a goal of her own as Cathedral High School’s varsity girls’ soccer team defeated the Laurel Christian School Lady Lions 4-2 Tuesday afternoon.

As for Dupre’s performance, head coach Dennis Hogue described it as “amazing.”

“She was very composed. Very calm. She slowed down her foot movement. She picker her spots,” Hogue said.

The one thing Hogue was not pleased with was how team finished the match as Cathedral gave up a goal to one of Laurel Christian’s better scorers in the final few minutes after being up by three goals.

“They’ve got to learn to play to the end. We were up 4-1 with about five minutes left and I knew they wouldn’t come back on us,” Hogue said. “Number one (for LCS) got behind our last defender and slotted one in in the final few minutes.”

Other than that, Hogue said his team has played better on offense and defense since the beginning of the season.

“The whole team, I’ve been trying to tell them to slow down and stay composed. Look up. Have more accurate controlled passing and more accurate controlled shots. It took them a while, but it’s something to watch,” Hogue said. “Good team effort defensively. Defense kept them at bay. A good team win all around.”

Lady Green Wave goalkeeper Rivers Lee made six saves, yet Laurel Christian had just 10 shots on goal the entire match.

“Rivers made some great saves. Rivers did well,” Hogue said. “I said we’ve got something to prove and they did. We dominated the game. They (LCS) had a their moments.

This used to be an MAIS Division III South, District 4 match between the Lady Green Wave and the Lady Lions, but both Laurel Christian School and Discovery Christian School were placed in the new Division III South, Class AAAA with Manchester Academy and St. Joseph Catholic School of Greenville — much to Hogue’s surprise.

“I don’t work at the school, so I was surprised to find out that they were (no longer in our district),” Hogue said.

Not only that, Cathedral, as well as Adams County Christian School and Brookhaven Academy, were moved out of Division III altogether and placed in Division II South, Class AAAA with Oak Forest Academy, with only the top two teams qualifying for the postseason.

Cathedral (7-4, 1-0) plays at Brookhaven Academy on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 5:30 p.m. in a pivotal Division II South, Class AAAA match for both teams. The Lady Green Wave’s home match against Discovery Christian that was scheduled for today has been canceled.
