MADISON — The Cathedral High School Green Wave scored what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown early in the fourth quarter as they stunned the MHSAA Class 2A St. Joseph Madison Bruins 18-14 Friday night.
Cathedral trailed St. Joseph Madison 14-12 after three quarters of play before scoring on a short touchdown run at the 11 mark of the fourth quarter. “We had multiple chances to extend the lead in the fourth quarter,” Green Wave head coach Chuck Darbonne said. “We fumbled once, turned it over on downs twice. We made three or four defensive stops in the fourth to keep the lead. ”
As for the game-winning drive, Darbonne said Sam Mosby had a couple of big third-down catches of over 20 yards each.
“It was a big win for us over a (Class) 2A public school. They’re bigger than us,” Darbonne said. “Offensive line played outstanding. We played five different running backs.”
The first quarter ended with the Bruins holding on to a 7-6 lead before the Green Wave scored just past the midway mark of the second quarter and took a 12-7 lead at the half. “We started off a little slow. We battled. We had some pretty good momentum in the second quarter,” Darbonne said.
St. Joseph Madison took a 14-12 lead nearly midway through the third quarter as Cathedral’s offense stalled and sputtered.
Cathedral (1-1) hosts Hillcrest Christian School for its Military Appreciation Game at 7 p.m. Friday.
