BROOKHAVEN — Izzy Dupre scored both of her goals in a 10-minute span in the second half to as the Cathedral High School Lady Green Wave rallied to defeat the Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars 3-1 Tuesday afternoon in an MAIS Division II South, Class AAA match.
Cathedral goalkeeper Rivers Lee had four of her six saves in the first half, which ended in a 0-0 tie. Brookhaven Academy took a 1-0 lead about a minute into the second half on a bizarre shot on goal that Lee couldn’t keep out of the goal.
“They didn’t shoot that many,” Cathedral head coach Dennis Hogue said. “They scored early in the second half. The ball took a weird bounce and it went up in the air. Rivers wasn’t able fingertip it and it went under her and into the net.”
That lead for the Lady Cougars would not last long as Dupre scored on a breakaway 10 minutes into the second half to tie the match at 1-1. Ten minutes later, her second goal of the match gave the Lady Green Wave a 2-1 lead.
“She got behind the last defender and got it in the opposite corner. She did well,” Hogue said about Dupre.
With 10 minutes remaining, Olivia Moore scored on a penalty kick for a 3-1 Cathedral lead.
“The final eight minutes, we pretty much kept the ball on their side of the field. They tried one desperation shot, but Lee made the save,” Hogue said.
Cathedral (8-4, 2-0) doesn’t play again until Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 5:30 p.m. when it hosts Copiah Academy.
