Love, learning highlights of week’s good news

Love may be difficult to define, but it is easy to identify when it is shared in the community. Selfless acts of love highlighted the good news of our community last week:

  • A group of women in Concordia Parish is demonstrating what they know — pets are worth saving.

Started in 2015, Concordia PAWS has helped save countless dogs from homelessness, abandonment, neglect and even severe abuse. What began as meetings in a local church has blossomed into a no-kill animal shelter.

The group currently provides care to more than 50 dogs. The shelter is funded strictly by grants and donations and is maintained by volunteer workers and inmates.

Their tireless work for these defenseless animals continues to be good news for the entire community.

  • Marcus Sullivan said he was just “a daddy whose daughter has died trying to help another daddy whose daughter is in the same hospital” when he went to give blood at a local blood drive on the anniversary of his daughter Markia’s death from cancer. Social media posts about Sullivan’s actions have gone viral and have inspired blood drives across Mississippi. Teenagers who have never donated before are donating because of Markia’s story and the story of Madeline King, who is scheduled for thyroid surgery. One selfless act of love has helped save countless lives.
  • Frazier teachers and administrators shared their passion and enthusiasm for reading with their students during the school’s kickoff celebration for Accelerated Reader. Donning hard hats, students demonstrated their excitement for building stronger minds through reading. To show their enthusiasm to students, the staff danced on stage and cheered. Here’s to a great year of reading success.

As we work through another week of sweltering temperatures, let us always be looking for good news in our community.
