MAGEE — The Cathedral High School Lady Green Wave went 1-2 Saturday at the 2019 MAIS Class 4A South State Tournament at the Magee Sports Complex, with a familiar foe ending their postseason run.

Despite coming up short in trying to advance to the state tournament, head coach Craig Beesley said he was pleased with the team’s overall play.

“I thought we played well. I knew that when we went over there we had to win two games. We came up a little short,” Beesley said. “Allie Feltus had a great tournament. She was 8-for-13 at the plate. Madeline Smith did a good job for us. She pitched the first two games. She pitched two complete games.”

Cathedral, the No. 4 seed out of District 4, took on District 3 No. 1 seed Hartfield Academy in the morning and the Lady Hawks used a four-run third inning to prevail 9-5 and advance in the winners’ bracket.

“The third inning was bad for us. If we take away that third inning, I think we have a chance to beat them,” Beesley said. He added that the three errors the Lady Green Wave committed were key to the outcome.

That made it 6-0 in favor of Hartfield Academy, but Cathedral rallied with two runs in the top of the fourth inning and three runs in the top of the fifth to make it a 7-5 game. However, the Lady Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Madeline Smith went all six innings and allowed six earned runs on seven hits and four walks. Feluts was 3-for-4 with a double, one run batted in, and two runs scored. Hailey Ellis went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Haleigh Nunnery was 2-for-4.

Neely Cooper went the distance for Hartfield, giving up five earned runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts, one walk, and one hit batter. She also had a triple, one RBI, and one run scored.

That loss dropped Cathedral to the losers’ bracket, where the Lady Green Wave staved off elimination by holding on for a 9-7 win over the host Simpson Academy Lady Cougars in an early-afternoon contest.

Cathedral had a 6-1 lead after three innings of play and appeared to be in command with a 9-3 lead at the end of the fifth inning. But Simpson Academy would not go away quietly.

“They scored one run in the (bottom of) the sixth inning and three runs in the (bottom of) the seventh to make it 9-7. They had two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but we got the last out,” Beesley said.

The Lady Green Wave scored two runs in the top of the first, second, and third innings and three more runs in the top of the fifth. Feltus went 4-for-5 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Fisher Iseminger had a triple, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Lauren Dunbar was 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Madeline Smith got the win as she gave up seven earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and four walks. She also drove in two runs.

Carson Smith was charged with the loss after giving up two runs one hit and four walks with no strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning. She was relieved by Gracie Giordano, who gave up six earned runs on nine hits with six walks and four strikeouts in six and one-third innings.

Maddie Moody went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, and a home run with three RBIs and two runs scored. Zy Cole also homered for Simpson Academy. Cole drove in three runs and scored twice.

Cathedral advanced in the losers’ bracket with the win, only to take on District 4 No. 1 seed Brookhaven Academy in the late afternoon. Those Lady Cougars won 10-4 to end the Lady Green Wave’s season. And it did not take long for BA to take control of the game, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning.

“The first inning was the difference in the game,” Beesley said. “We had two bad innings on Saturday — the third inning against Hartfield and the first inning against Brookhaven (Academy).”

Brookhaven Academy led 8-0 before Cathedral got on the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Winning pitcher Madi Smith went six and two-thirds innings for the Lady Cougars and gave up four earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.

Anna Poole went six innings for the Lady Green Wave and gave up five earned runs on 14 hits with one walk and one hit batter. Dunbar was the only multiple hitter for Cathedral as she went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Poole drove in two runs.

Hallie Creel went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs, and one run scored while Madison Moak was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, and two runs scored to lead Brookhaven Academy at the plate.

“I was really proud of our four seniors,” Beesley said of Ellis, Iseminger, Nunnery, and Smith. “They did a good job as far as leadership. We’re going to have to replace them and have some younger players step up.”

Cathedral finished with an overall record of 12-16.
