NATCHEZ — Planet Fitness issued a $5,000 check to the Natchez Adams County Recreation Commission to support children’s programs to the area.

Recreation chairman Jimmy Ware said Planet Fitness presented a big check to the commission on Nov. 1 and requested that a formal presentation be made at the regularly scheduled meeting of the Adams County Board of Supervisors on Monday.

Sports and programs director Faye Minor said the money would help the recreation program further the activities that the recreation commission offers to young children each year.

“Planet Fitness usually sets aside a donation for the Boys and Girls Club, but since we don’t have one in Natchez they chose to support our activities,” Minor said. “We’re going to use these funds for kids’ programs like soccer, tennis, T-ball and to serve refreshments for those games. We’re also hoping to improve our Little League ball field. These funds were badly needed … It’s a great grant, and we are so grateful to Planet Fitness for providing it.”

In March next year, children ages 3 to 5 years old would be able to sign up for soccer at Sports Center on Seargent S. Prentiss Drive before the season kicks off the following April, Minor said.

T-ball for the same age group starts in June, Minor said.

“We’re also getting an adult, co-ed volley ball league together to provide something different for different age groups,” she said “We are working to bring down the cost for participation in these programs as well, which in the past has been pretty high. We’re so exited to welcome everyone back to the recreation program next year.”

Minor said registration fees for sports programs would be announced at a later date.

In other matters during Tuesday’s meeting of the Adams County Board of Supervisors, Ware said Ralph Daniels — a county appointee to the recreation commission — turned in his resignation last week and would continue to help with pool operations at the aquatics center on Liberty Road.

“He wasn’t able to make it to our meetings and thought it best to step down,” Ware said of Daniels resignation.

The recreation commission is now missing three of 9 board members, one to represent the City of Natchez, the Natchez Adams School District and the Board of Supervisors. Ware said the commission needs a minimum of five members present to conduct business and can still hold a quorum at meetings with six members.
