NATCHEZ — A Natchez High School student is being treated at a local hospital after she reportedly climbed the fence of the community pool located near the campus and jumped in the water Thursday morning.
Jimmy Ware, Chairman of the Natchez-Adams Recreation Commission who manages the pool, said he spotted a teenage female pulling on the front gate of the pool between 9 and 10 a.m. Thursday. Ware said he approached the girl and asked her what she was doing.
“She said she wanted to get into the pool area and I told her ‘No’ the pool was closed and asked why she wasn’t in school. Then she left,” Ware said.
Soon after, Ware said he saw the girl jumping into the 7-foot end of the pool. Surveillance footage from security cameras showed the girl walking around the facility and climbing the fence surrounding the pool, Ware said.
When the girl jumped in, Ware said he jumped in after her and pulled her to safety.
Natchez Adams School District Superintendent Fred Butcher later confirmed that the girl was a student at Natchez High School who had wandered off of campus. Paramedics were called and the student was transported to the nearest medical facility for treatment, Butcher said.
Ware said he had also been treated for a few minor scrapes on his knee and elbow but was fine otherwise.
