Unresolved recreation budget discrepancies put pool upgrades on hold

NATCHEZ — Additional upgrades to the community pool on Liberty Road may soon be underway, but not before the city, county and recreation commission resolve some discrepancies in the recreation commission’s budget.

During a regularly scheduled meeting Monday, Natchez Community Development Director James Johnston readdressed the Board of Supervisors to ask whether they would commit to funding additions to planned upgrades at Natchez Aquatics Center.

Adams County Administrator Joe Murray said Silas Simmons had been hired to reconcile the Natchez Adams County Recreation Commission’s financials after the board chairman, Jimmy Ware, said some invoices weren’t paid.

Murray said Silas Simmons had completed their report last month and said the Natchez Board of Aldermen, board of supervisors and recreation board would need to meet with the firm to discuss the report before any further funds are issued for the pool.

“We do need to get together and receive the financial report that we had asked for while trying to reconcile the bills,” Murray said. “There is a discrepancy in the balance from both (city and county) that needs to be worked out. It’s a pretty substantial amount from both sides that needs to be taken care of before we move forward.”

After Monday’s meeting, Murray declined to comment on any details regarding the financial report until officials had a chance to review them first.

In September, the former Board of Supervisors agreed to split the matching cost on a grant from the Wildlife and Fisheries’ Land and Water Conservation Fund program with the City of Natchez to add a heater and cover to the pool as well as lockers and showers for swim teams.

Both the City of Natchez and the Board of Supervisors agreed to put up $66,000 each for the match. However, Johnston said more funding had since become available and would require a match of approximately $19,000 from each board.

“We received an email in mid-December from Wildlife Fisheries stating that additional funding had become available and asked did we have a need for additional improvements at the pool facility,” Johnston said. “In conversations with the architects, the pool staff and members of the recreation commission, more improvements are needed, including an automatic chlorinator, pool deck extension, open storage cubbies, lockers and bleachers.”

District 3 Supervisor Angela Hutchins moved to continue with the additional improvements to the pool once all of the billing issues were resolved and the motion passed unanimously.
