Prep Basketball Roundup: Natchez spilts varsity games

JACKSON — Forest Hill High School senior Keondre Montgomery was a scoring machine for the Patriots, putting up 40 points to lead them to a 68-57 win over the Natchez High School Bulldogs last Friday night in MHSAA Region 6-5A action.
Natchez High did its best to stay with Forest Hill in the first quarter and only trailed by two points, 16-14, at quarter’s end. Unfortunately, the Rebels, ranked No. 9 in the state and No. 3 in Class 5A, pulled away in the second quarter by outscoring the Bulldogs 18-9 for a 34-23 halftime advantage.
Even though the Bulldogs picked up their scoring in the second half, they could not make nearly enough stops on defense to get back in the game. Both teams scored 34 points after the half.
Gemari Marshall chipped in with 11 points for Forest Hill, which improved to 16-4 overall and remained unbeaten in Region 6-5A at 3-0.
James Singleton led Natchez High (11-7, 1-2) with 15 points and Jakel Barnes added 11 points.
The Bulldogs play at Class 6A Pearl High School today at 7:30 p.m.
Natchez High girls 42, Forest Hill 33 (Friday)
JACKSON — Candi Gray finished with 13 points and Kelsey McNeal added 11 points to lead the Natchez High School Lady Bulldogs to a 42-33 win over the Forest Hill High School Lady Patriots last Friday night to stay undefeated in MHSAA Region 6-5A.
The first quarter did not have much scoring from either team as Natchez High would take an 8-6 lead over Forest Hill at the end of the quarter. The Lady Bulldogs picked up the pace on their end of the court while hold the Lady Patriots in check over the next two quarters.
Led by Gray, McNeal, and Kelvonda Arbuthnot, the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Patriots 14-6 in the second quarter for a 22-12 halftime lead and 12-7 in the third quarter for a 34-19 advantage. Arbuthnot also scored in double figures for Natchez High with 10 points.
Forest Hill tried to rally in the fourth quarter, but the 15-points deficit proved to be to big to overcome. The Lady Patriots were led by Teanna Howard with 11 points.
The Lady Bulldogs (9-10, 3-0) step out of region play today when they play at Class 6A Pearl High School at 6 p.m. The Lady Pirates are 21-0 overall, ranked No. 2 in the state and are No. 2 in Class 6A in one statewide poll.
Oak Forest Academy boys 64, ACCS 52 (Friday)
NATCHEZ — A tough stretch of MAIS District 4-4A games for Adams County Christian School’s varsity boys’ team last week ended with the Rebels coming up short at home against the Oak Forest Academy Yellow Jackets 64-52 last Friday night.
Josh Credit led ACCS (7-7, 2-2) with 14 points while Vic Lassiter, the team’s leading scorer was held to 13 points. The Rebels stepped out of district play on Monday night when they hosted Centreville Academy.
Oak Forest Academy girls 42, ACCS 22 (Friday)
NATCHEZ — The rough 2019-2020 season for the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels continued last Friday night as they lost to the Oak Forest Academy Lady Yellow Jackets 42-22 in an MAIS District 4-4A game.
Heidi Zimmerman led the Lady Rebels (2-12, 1-3) with 10 points and Drue Boyd chipped in with six points. They played host to Centreville Academy Monday night.
