Prep basketball Roundup: ACCS, Cathedral fall on road
CLINTON, La. — Adams County Christian School’s varsity boys’ basketball team nearly overcame an early double-digit deficit on the road at Silliman Institute last Friday night, but the Rebels ran out of gas in the fourth quarter and that allowed the Wildcats to pull away for a 53-46 win in an MAIS District 4-4A game.
The first quarter was about as bad as it could get for visiting ACCS on both ends of the court. The Rebels had no offensive rhythm to speak of and the defense had a tough time stopping Silliman when it had the ball. The quarter ended with the Wildcats leading 17-4.
However, the Rebels chipped away at that 13-point lead over the next two quarters. Led by Vic Lasstier, Wes Stockstill, and JD Granger, ACCS outscored Silliman 16-9 in the second quarter to go into halftime down just six points, 26-20, and 15-11 in the third quarter to trail by just two points, 37-35.
Unfortunately, ACCS (9-8, 2-3) could not carry that momentum over to the fourth quarter as they were outscored by the Wildcats 16-11. Lassiter led them with 14 points while Stockstill had 12 points and Granger finished with 10 points.
The Rebels return to action today when the host cross-town and district rival Cathedral High School at 7:30 p.m.
Oak Forest Academy boys 68, Cathedral 43 (Friday)
AMITE, La. — Jaden Collura made four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 25 points as the Oak Forest Academy Yellow Jackets rolled to a 68-43 win over the Cathedral High School Green Wave last Friday night in MAIS District 4-4A action.
Oak Forest Academy pretty much had its way with Cathedral in the first half. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 16-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and when halftime arrived, they had a 40-12 lead over the Green Wave.
Cathedral tried to mount a comeback in the third quarter as it outscored Oak Forest 21-13, but that only cut the Yellow Jackets’ lead down to 20 points, 53-33. The home team took the momentum back in the fourth quarter as OFA outscored the Green Wave 15-10.
Collura was one of four Oak Forest players to score in double figures. Landon Neal, Collin Perez, and Trevor Whittington each scored 10 points.
Christian Wright led Cathedral (11-13, 1-4) with 16 points and Kaden Batieste had nine points. The Green Wave play at Adams County Christian School today at 7:30 p.m.
Silliman Institute girls 48, ACCS 23 (Friday)
CLINTON, La. — The Silliman Institute Lady Wildcats dominated the first half on their way to a 48-23 win over the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels in an MAIS District 4-4A match-up last Friday night.
Silliman controlled the pace of the game for much of the game, never allowing ACCS to attempt any comeback at all. The Lady Wildcats had a 16-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 32-10 lead by halftime.
Halle Peterman was the only player for ACCS (2-15, 1-4) to score in double figures with 12 points. The Lady Rebels host Cathedral High School today at 6 p.m.
Oak Forest Academy girls 52, Cathedral 22 (Friday)
AMITE, La — Oak Forest Academy senior Emilee Casanova scored more points by herself than the Cathedral High School Lady Green Wave had as a team as she finished with 24 points in leading the Lady Yellow Jackets to a 52-22 win in an MAIS District 4-4A game last Friday night.
Oak Forest took an 18-8 lead over Cathedral by the end of the first quarter and then put the game away with a 26-9 advantage in the second quarter for a commanding 44-17 halftime lead.
The second half, however, did not feature much scoring at all by either team. In fact, all the scoring after intermission was in the third quarter as Oak Forest tallied eight points while Cathedral had five points.
Ryleigh Probst led the Lady Green Wave (10-14, 0-5) with 14 points. They next play at Adams County Christian School today at 6 p.m.
