NATCHEZ — A pedestrian died Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle Monday night on Morgantown Road, Adams County officials said.

Daniel Lee Davis Jr., 40, died as a result of injuries sustained from being hit by a vehicle sometime after 7 p.m. Monday, said Adams County Coroner James Lee.

“The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the case or is the investigating agency,” Lee said. “An autopsy will be performed at the Mississippi State Crime Laboratory this week. This is a horrible accident, and I pray for these families and friends involved.”

An Adams County Sheriff’s Office press release said deputies responded to a call about a two-vehicle accident on Morgantown Road at approximately 7:40 p.m. Monday.

“When deputies arrived in the area, they discovered an unoccupied Dodge pickup with a flatbed trailer in the ditch that appeared to have been wrecked,” the press release states. “A short distance away deputies discovered a male subject lying in the roadway. When they approached, they discovered the person was severely injured.”

Deputies said witnesses told them that after the driver wrecked his vehicle he started walking along Morgantown Road where he was struck by another vehicle.

“A passing nurse offered assistance and performed CPR until an AMR Ambulance arrived,” the press release states. “The person was identified as 40-year-old Daniel Lee Davis Jr., who was transported to Merit Health Natchez.”

Davis was later transferred to University Medical Center in Jackson where he died at 5:45 p.m. Feb. 4, Lee said.

Adams County Chief Deputy Jerry Brown said the incident is under investigation.

“It is an ongoing investigation,” Brown said. “According to officers out there, there were no signs of impairment. However, they did run the driver on the intoxilyzer just to be sure and it came back clean. We try to cover everything, try not to leave anything undone. It doesn’t appear at this time that there will be any charges.”
