Former mayor files to run for another term as an independent mayoral candidate

NATCHEZ — On the last day of qualifying, former mayor Phillip West filed to run for another term.
The deadline for qualifying in the city clerk’s office was 5 p.m. Friday.
Previously, West had run as a Democrat and beat Republican Sue Stedman by 100 votes in 2004 to become the city’s first African- American mayor since Reconstruction.
West joins three other mayoral candidates, Democrat Dan Gibson, Democrat Tony Fields and independent candidate Richard Branyan.
Also Friday, two candidates joined the Ward 4 alderperson race. Democrat Fredrick Todd and Republican Brenda Floyd qualified in Ward 4. Democrat Michael Calcote and incumbent Democrat Felicia Bridgewater-Irving previously qualified for the Ward 4 alderperson position.
