LEARNED — Wilkinson County Christian School’s varsity girls’ and varsity boys’ basketball teams emerged victorious last Saturday afternoon in the championship games of the 2020 MAIS District 3-1A Tournament held at Rebul Academy.
In the girls’ championship game, the top-seeded WCCA Lady Rams held on for a 39-34 win over the second-seeded Prentiss Christian School Lady Saints.
Whether it was jitters or good defense, the first quarter did not feature much scoring and ended in a 6-6 tie. WCCA appeared to have control of the game after outscoring Prentiss Christian 10-4 in the second quarter for a 16-10 halftime lead.
However, the Lady Saints responded with a 9-5 advantage in the third quarter to cut the Lady Rams’ lead to two points, 21-19. But in a high-scoring fourth quarter, the Lady Rams scored 18 points to the Lady Saints’ 15 points.
Gracie Cavin led the Lady Rams (9-9) with 11 points while Cheylin Bolden had seven points. Ava Randall and Anna Charlotte each had six points and Lexi Freeman added five points. Culley Cochran led the Lady Saints with a game-high 14 points while Jana Johnson and Laurel Stewart scored eight points apiece.
As the No. 1 seed out of District 3, the Lady Rams will take on District 4 No. 4 seed Tallulah Academy in the first round of the MAIS Class 1A South State Tournament at host school WCCA Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

LEARNED — In the boys’ championship game, WCCA, the No. 1 seed, got a game-high 29 points from Andrew Sessions, including three 3-pointers, as the Rams cruised to a 72-24 win over the second-seeded Mt. Salus Christian School Eagles.
WCCA had its way with Mt. Salus Christian on both ends of the court in the first quarter. The Eagles had a hard time getting shots to fall against a tenacious Rams defense. By the time that quarter was over, the Rams had a 23-3 advantage.
The Rams continued to score at will in the second quarter and went into halftime with a commanding 47-16 lead. The second half was more of the same as WCCA scored 15 points in the third quarter and 10 points in the fourth quarter while Mt. Salus Christian was held to six and two points, respectively.
R.J. Fisher poured in 11 points and Jack Orgeron chipped in with eight points for the Rams (22-4). The Eagles were led by J. Mathews with 15 points.
