NATCHEZ — A Natchez man was killed in a Wednesday morning wreck on Interstate 55 near McComb.
Mississippi Highway Patrol State Troopers said Sterling Yarbrough, 19, of Natchez was killed in the traffic accident that occurred after 8 a.m. Wednesday in Pike County.
Two others also were injured in the accident, MHP Public Affairs Officer Craig James said. Harrison Tharpe, 19, of Brandon suffered moderate injuries, as did the driver Gabriel Schofield, 18, of Natchez.
Troopers were called to the scene at approximately 8:30 a.m., James said.
“Troopers arrived on I-55, just south of exit 24 on the northbound side to find a 2019 Dodge Charger in the wooded median,” Craig said. “Upon further investigation, Troopers learned that this vehicle was traveling north on I-55 when it left the roadway to the left and collided with several trees before overturning. The collision killed the front seat passenger (Yarbrough) who was not wearing his seatbelt and was pronounced dead on scene by the coroner. The rear seat passenger (Tharpe) was air lifted to Forrest General in Hattiesburg. The driver (Schofield) was taken by ambulance to King’s Daughters in Brookhaven.”
Yarbrough was a standout athlete at Trinity Episcopal School and Adams County Christian School where he led the Rebels to a state championship. For his efforts, he was named The Natchez Democrat’s 2018 All-Metro Quarterback with 111-for-226 passing for 2,180 yards, 27 TDs; 108 carries for 347 yards, 7 TDs.
