Officers talk down man threatening to jump from bridge

NATCHEZ — Natchez police officers said they temporarily closed the westbound lane of Liberty Road at approximately 4 p.m. Saturday as a man sat on the Seargent S. Prentiss Drive overpass threatening to jump.

Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong said officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 4 p.m. and closed the westbound lane of Liberty Road for approximately 15 minutes as officers talked the man down.

Armstrong said four Natchez Police Department units were dispatched and one Adams County Sheriff’s deputy worked the scene as well and Armstrong commended the officers for talking the man down.

AMR ambulance service arrived and transported the man to Merit Health Natchez for a mental evaluation.

“The family has been notified,” Armstrong said, adding family members said the man had a history of mental health issues. “No charges have been filed. We just want him to get the medical help he needs.”
